A 2-week adventure exploring Ho Chi Minh City and Sa Pa, Vietnam

Trip to Vietnam

December 2025, I traveled to Vietnam for 2 weeks. The journey started from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), then continued to Sa Pa in northern Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City

General Impression

The business district of Vietnam is a metropolitan city. Especially in District 1, there's an area like Sudirman with skyscrapers. There's also an area similar to Singapore. But HCMC consists of 24 districts with a total area about 3 times larger than Jakarta, and each district has its own character. District 3 doesn't have tall buildings, mostly shops and townhouses. District 10 also but feels more like the "outskirts" compared to 1 and 3 (like East Jakarta vibes), with many narrow alleys. Grab drivers often cut through these alleys which are often one-way.

Suitable for city people especially those who like observing city planning and human activities. If you prefer adventure or nature, better skip rather than "feeling bored here with nothing to do."

Transportation

Just use Grab Car everywhere (or Xanh SM but I didn't try). The cars are all new, fragrant, complete with safety instructions. There's even a driver who gave a small Christmas gift. Even without ordering EV or hybrid, often get EV.

Walking is also still very okay, pedestrian is okay especially in District 1.

Weather

Quite hot although not as hot as Indonesia. Prepare umbrella (can be UV-protected), jacket (can be UV-protected or waterproof), and raincoat because later it can be hot-heavy rain. Clothes are really casual, just wear t-shirts, shorts, sandals are also safe. SUNSCREEN IS A MUST!

In my opinion, this city is okay for children and elderly IF the itinerary is relaxed and not much walking. Suitable because Vietnamese food in general is quite clean and from fresh ingredients.

Pollution sometimes exists but still very little, even though the vehicles are that many (number of motorcycles >>> cars) and still many are ICE.

Sa Pa

General Impression

Oh my God, I LOVE THIS CITY SO MUCH! Very unreal. Those who say Sa Pa is not interesting, overrated, etc.—go there with your bad opinions! But of course, want to be here for visiting, not living, because I don't even know how people can function daily (work) in this extreme weather.

In terms of pollution, honestly here it's the second most felt because many diesel vehicles (buses, trucks, etc.). But only felt when they pass by. But in general, the air is WAAAH breathing is refreshing.

What to Bring for Winter

Temperature during winter: -2°C to 7°C or maybe can be colder. Must bring: HEAT TECH shirt and pants, jacket (I used fleece jacket and puffer), total 3 layers. Must also bring beanie or scarf, head, ears, neck should not be exposed! Oh yeah, and thick gloves and socks! If want to be more extra, it's okay especially for those who can't stand cold.

But actually it's okay if don't want to bring a lot from Indonesia because don't know what the conditions are like there and can buy there too, many sellers. Oh yeah, must wear reliable shoes for extreme weather, lots of walking, slippery, muddy, rocky, and not complicated (don't use ones with laces that easily come off, etc.).

City Characteristics

Just walk everywhere if within the city because it's accessible.

Don't expect bright clear weather, it's called "Misty City" for a reason. Many people are disappointed "can't see anything, the fog is so thick" especially when going to Fansipan. Your expectations are just wrong. Actually, I'm so happy when there's fog—so beautiful and unreal. When I went to Fansipan, it was foggy but mostly very clear and I don't mind at all whatever the weather is, don't expect much, the important thing is no rain.

Minimum 2 nights in Sa Pa, don't just stay one night chasing Fansipan because round trip Hanoi-Sa Pa is already very tiring, need recovery. And honestly, chilling walking around Sa Pa city is so nice, very healing. So don't rush chasing time.

This is not a super modern city, mostly very traditional. Small streets, up-down contours because it's in the mountains. Hotels are also family-owned and many are old-school. Not suitable for those who like super duper clean hygienic, minimalist latest furniture. Hotel prices are okay, the important thing is don't forget to check the address and Google Maps to know exactly where the location is. There are big hotels, like Hotel de La Coupole but very few and the price is >Rp2.5 million per night.

Very touristy city where locals depend a lot on the tourism sector (food, tours, hotels or accommodations, souvenir shops). So not everything is super duper cheap. Better survey several places first if want to compare prices, don't be afraid to bargain, don't be afraid of being judged as long as we're polite.

During high season like last time, number of tourists >> locals so it's fun feeling very diverse and obviously feeling safer because knowing these are all visitors.

Safety

Talking about safety, Sa Pa is the BEST! Suitable for solo traveling even. At 5 AM in the dark and foggy, I'm not afraid. Everyone is minding their own business. No weird stares, no drunk people in the middle of the road, nothing creepy. If there are people calling hello-hello, it's probably just restaurant owners or staff offering to stop by for a meal.

However, NOT SUITABLE FOR SMALL CHILDREN, ELDERLY, PEOPLE WHO CAN'T STAND COLD, THOSE WHO JUST WANT BEAUTIFUL PLACES, THOSE WHO ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR WALKING + CLIMBING STAIRS. Because the weather is super cold especially during winter, thick fog so visibility sometimes can't be too far, many stairs, up-down road contours, horns are VERY LOUD.

If just want to be in this city with a chill itinerary, can definitely make the main itinerary to Fansipan + walking around the city. But if want more effort + adventurous, around Sa Pa there are many tourist spots including Cat Cat Village, Cloud Dragon Skywalk, etc. but must use Grab Car or motorbike taxi. And honestly, to go to Cat Cat must have strong stamina because the path is very long and super slippery, use motorbike taxi too (must bargain price). I didn't leave Sa Pa because too lazy to put in that much effort even though only 2 nights. In my opinion, people who can chase all tourist spots are amazing, and maybe their travel duration is not long so their stamina is still strong + determined because feeling chased by time. If I have a total duration of 2 weeks, must maintain stamina and indeed want to chill a lot so can truly enjoy, absorb local life instead of just chasing itinerary. Must understand body condition when going to Sa Pa, because we're tropical country citizens, afraid of being shocked suddenly dropping health especially after long journey from Hanoi. So in my opinion, just chill-chill, unless in Sa Pa for a week then okay lah the itinerary can be a bit ambitious.

As I said, this is not a super modern city but still pretty and well-organized. There are European-style buildings too, huaa cutesy.

Skin and hair are very good here, not limp, not overly oily.

There are people who do proper makeup, curly hair, wear OOTD-style clothes but honestly I personally don't care anymore, the important thing is my clothes function to not be cold. No need for makeup, the important thing is MOISTURIZER, SUNSCREEN, LIP BALM.

Way to not get cold quickly: lots of movement aka walk fast.

The most chill city compared to Hanoi and HCMC. Streets are quite quiet, but motorcycles and cars are fast even though the roads have many turns and are small. Crazy driving skills. As I said, horns are VERY LOUD.

Getting to Know Sa Pa

Sa Pa is a mountain town in Lao Cai province, northern Vietnam, famous for its nickname "Misty City." Located at an altitude of about 1,600 meters above sea level, Sa Pa offers stunning mountain views, cool to cold air, and unique cultural experiences with the presence of the Hmong ethnic group.

Unlike hot and busy Ho Chi Minh City, Sa Pa is a different world—quiet, cold, and surrounded by nature. This is a place to "heal" from the hustle and bustle of big cities.

Transportation to Sa Pa

From Hanoi

The journey from Hanoi to Sa Pa can be made by sleeper bus:

Sleeper Bus via Klook:

Book via Klook, it's easy. I prefer the night schedule (10 PM) so I don't waste time on the road and don't need to book accommodation for that night.

Very bumpy so choose the lower cabin with minimal shaking. Price ~300k VND per person (slightly more expensive than upper cabin)

Can request pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation, as long as it's around the bus office (in Hanoi that means around Old Quarter, in Sa Pa supposedly all accommodations can because the town is small). When booking on Klook, we enter the address.

Can also request pick-up and drop-off at Hanoi airport.

Bus Service:

In Sa Pa, the shuttle bus driver comes to the hotel lobby, very kind. Maybe because the hotel location is below the street level (so have to go through stairs) so he wants to help carry bags.

I also got a call when the shuttle bus arrived at the hotel for pick-up.

There will be WhatsApp confirmation 1-2 days before. They tell you what time to be picked up (30 min-1 hour earlier than departure time)

Bus Facilities:

Complete amenities: USB charger (but on Sa Pa-Hanoi route it didn't work so luckily I had a powerbank), wet wipes, mineral water, wifi, blanket, bed with massage (just vibrating), light-blocking curtains, headset but I didn't use it

Before entering the bus, given plastic bags to put our shoes because when entering the bus we must take off shoes to not dirty it (the bus is fully carpeted).

6-hour journey. There are 2 rest area stops for toilet breaks and can buy food too.

Important Tips:

Don't forget to prepare cash 2-3k VND for toilet.

No need to wear shoes, sandals are provided at the bus door.

If you arrive before the bus office opens, you can sleep inside the bus until it opens.

When checking in at the bus office, don't forget to request bag tags according to luggage count (I requested 6 pieces).

MUST TAKE NAUTAMINE and similar to avoid motion sickness!

Notes:

Bed size isn't the same on every bus. Some buses have shorter beds so those taller than 170cm will be a bit cramped. But there are buses with spacious beds too.

Some people's reviews aren't as good, depends on luck because it's a business not always smooth especially during high season. Personally, thank God my experience was okay so I recommend it.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AND ELDERLY

Temperature Tips:

In the bus wear warm jackets + heattech because as you approach Sa Pa it gets cold (at rest areas) and at Sa Pa bus office brrr it's cold especially at night and early morning.

In Hanoi it's also quite cold.

Pay attention to the bus license plate, make sure it's the right bus. Also pay attention to the cabin number. Basically you'll be given a sticker with all that data.

But I think we have to be proactive to chat WhatsApp with them if there are questions, both central CS and branch. Though they are slow to respond. Sa Pa branch is the most responsive in replying.

Accommodation: Sa Pa Mimosa Hotel

While in Sa Pa, I stayed at Sa Pa Mimosa Hotel, a family-owned hotel that offers an authentic stay experience.

If it's called a flawless experience, no, but I realize there are things that matter more for accommodation criteria in Sa Pa town and that needs to be appreciated/grateful for.

Check-in Notes:

Check-in was not flawless at all because we arrived at 5 AM and then waited at the lobby until around 7 AM before being served by staff, but we still couldn't check-in and the owner hadn't arrived yet (this is a family-owned hotel). Finally could check-in around 10 AM, and even then only got one room. The second room came later.

Facilities:

Complete amenities, including VIP sandals that are very beneficial because they can be used for showering and everything, considering even the bathroom floor is very cold.

Bed has a heater. Buttons in Mandarin so Google Translate to the rescue

AC also has a heater

Every morning the room is tidied and given bottled water (if I'm not mistaken)

Can refill water in the dining room (there's a gallon)

Can leave luggage at any time. Just put it in the dining room.

Guest restroom downstairs near lobby isn't very clean but oh well

Additional Comforts:

There's a fireplace to warm hands in the lobby

Has an elevator

Hotel location is below street level so it's not noisy, but it's quite challenging to carry luggage. There are 2 stairs, choose the shorter one.

Very strategic location close to everywhere, including the church.

Book via Klook

Price Rp200-300 thousand per room per night (for 2 people)

Important Notes:

If you want the misty view, it's on the 6th floor but when you exit the room it's very cold

Thin room walls so if people pass by or chat in the hallway it can be heard

Main Highlight: Sun World Fansipan

Sun World Fansipan is the main experience in Sa Pa—a mountain theme park complex that ends at Fansipan peak, the highest mountain in Indochina (3,143 meters).

Sun World Fansipan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Not recommended for children & elderly.

Basically this is one BIG AREA in the mountains where there are many gardens, a small Hmong village, Buddhist-themed statues (can pray too), super beautiful photo spots, and the end point is Fansipan peak.

To reach the peak, there are 3 stages:

Stage 1: Sa Pa Station → Muong Hoa Station

From Sa Pa Station to Muong Hoa Station can be via monorail/funicular or by taxi/grab/motorbike.

Yesterday the monorail suddenly had issues so I was given a free shuttle bus to Muong Hoa/Hoang Lien Station. The road is narrow like Puncak and uneven.

Actually we don't directly get off at Muong Hoa Station, but like walking in first through a gate then passing through a small Hmong village where they sell many things (local liquor, incense, food, etc.).

Approaching Muong Hoa Station, there's a large garden/area with Buddha statues, beautiful flowers—the design is genuinely well done, not tacky at all.

Stage 2: Muong Hoa Station → Fansipan Station (Cable Car)

This is one of the main attractions! The cable car construction is impressive—a collaboration with Swiss & Austrian companies.

Each cable car is BIG, can fit 35 people (even more). I thought it would be small.

I prefer sitting facing the direction of travel so I don't get dizzy. But many people scramble for seats near the glass to take photos. It's up to personal preference. Or you can sit facing each other so someone can help take photos or you can switch positions.

DON'T EXPECT CLEAR BRIGHT WEATHER, IT'S CALLED MISTY CITY. The mist makes it magical.

The ride takes about 20 mins. When arriving at Fansipan Station there's a food court. If crowded, GO DIRECTLY TO FLOOR 2 because the food court there is more spacious and less crowded.

Stage 3: Fansipan Station → Do Quyen Station → Fansipan Peak

From Fansipan Station to Do Quyen Station you walk weh climb stairs. Do Quyen Station is another monorail but I decided not to take it yesterday because the queue was long so just continued walking to the peak.

CLIMBING THE STAIRS IS INCREDIBLE but the path is very proper and every step is thoughtfully designed—there are statues, there are seats at the end of stairs to catch your breath for a moment, etc.

NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED, LACK OF EXERCISE, ASTHMA, ETC.

THE WIND IS VERY STRONG IN SOME AREAS AND THE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING IN WINTER. People don't tell you about this.

Honestly even if you don't climb to the peak, the view is already very good.

At the peak the area isn't very large especially when crowded, I didn't stay long there.

I arrived at the peak around 4 PM when they were about to start the flag ceremony. Very interesting, amazing they can do a ceremony on a mountain with STRONG wind.

Going down is easier than going up. Then you can take lots of photos especially in the late afternoon when it's less crowded although somewhat chasing time.

I feel like you could spend a whole day here to be fully satisfied, but if you go at 7:45 AM you'll definitely be shivering. Do as you are able.

By the way, every station is very aesthetic—truly pleasing to the eyes.

Important Tips for Sun World Fansipan

Tickets:

Book via Klook. They have many ticket types according to the stages. You can buy just monorail, or just cable car, or any combination.

I bought Muong Hoa monorail round trip + cable car round trip + monorail #2 one-way because people said when going down later see first if you want monorail #2 or not. If needed can buy on the spot.

But turns out I only used the cable car. I'm waiting for refund for Muong Hoa monorail. Compensation from them because it suddenly had issues.

So if I go there again, I won't buy monorail #2 tickets. Just monorail #1 and cable car round trip.

Clothing and Equipment:

WEAR YOUR WARMEST GEAR FROM HEAD TO TOE + PROPER SHOES — this is not for being pretty and relaxed.

But make sure the equipment you wear isn't easily blown away by wind.

Bring a raincoat!! NO NEED UMBRELLA BECAUSE IT'LL BE USELESS IN STRONG WIND.

Bring supplies if you want to save money.

Bring sunglasses or photochromic glasses because IT'S BRIGHT (it's a mountain so close to the sun).

Safety:

BE CAREFUL HOLDING YOUR PHONE FIRMLY, AFRAID IT'LL BE BLOWN AWAY. Yesterday someone's phone came loose. Luckily it didn't fall into the ravine.

Physical Condition:

DON'T FORCE YOURSELF TO THE PEAK IF NOT STRONG. The view anywhere is already very good.

But if ambitious to reach the peak, make sure PRIME STAMINA, REGULAR WORKOUT (especially STAIRS, LONG WALKS), ENOUGH SLEEP.

When I arrived in Hanoi I had a cold and flu definitely from exhaustion at Fansipan but I didn't realize + adrenaline effect

Weather:

DON'T EXPECT SNOW IN WINTER. It's luck-based.

Exploring Sa Pa Town

Walking in Town

Sa Pa is a city very suitable for exploring on foot:

All places within the city are reachable by walking

Streets are quite quiet and peaceful

Many souvenir shops, restaurants, and cafes to stop by

Go everywhere on foot if within the town because it's reachable.

Sa Pa Church

An iconic stone church in the city center. The area around the church is where many activities gather—from night markets to photo spots.

Food in Sa Pa

Sa Pa offers a different culinary experience from HCMC:

Many restaurants with mountain views

Local Hmong ethnic food

Prices aren't all cheap because this city depends on tourism

Better survey several places to compare prices

Don't be afraid to bargain and don't be afraid of being judged as long as we're polite

For detailed food recommendations in Sa Pa, see Vietnamese Food Guide.

Weather and Clothing

Extreme Temperatures

Sa Pa has extreme weather, especially in winter (December-February):

Temperatures can reach -2°C to 7°C or maybe even colder

Wind is very strong

Thick fog (hence the name "Misty City")

Proper Clothing Layers

Must bring:

Heat tech shirt and pants (first layer)

Fleece jacket or sweater (second layer)

Puffer jacket (third layer)

Beanie or knit cap for head

Scarf for neck

Thick gloves

Thick socks

Reliable shoes for extreme weather, lots of walking, slippery, muddy, and rocky conditions

Tips:

If you don't want to bring a lot from Indonesia, can buy there—many sellers

Way to not get cold quickly: move a lot aka walk fast

Skin and hair are very good here—not limp, not overly oily

Characteristics of Sa Pa City

What I Like:

Very unreal and magical with its fog

Healthy and fresh air (except when diesel buses/trucks pass)

A very chill and quiet city

Safe for solo traveling—I wasn't afraid even at 5 AM in the dark and foggy

No weird or creepy people

European-style buildings that are cute

What to Note:

Not a super modern city—many are traditional and old-school

Small streets with up-down contours

Many stairs

Vehicle horns are very loud

Tourist volume during high season can be more than local residents

Who is Sa Pa For?

Suitable for:

Nature and mountain lovers

Those seeking unique and different experiences

Solo travelers (very safe!)

Those wanting to "heal" from big city hustle

Those physically strong for walking and climbing stairs

Not suitable for:

Young children and elderly who can't tolerate cold

Those who want beautiful places only without effort

Those not strong enough for walking and climbing stairs

Those seeking super modern and minimalist experiences

Those who can't tolerate extreme weather

Duration of Stay

Minimum 2 nights in Sa Pa—don't just stay one night chasing Fansipan because:

The round trip journey Hanoi-Sa Pa is already very tiring

Need recovery time

Chill walking around Sa Pa town is very healing

Don't rush chasing time

If you want to be more adventurous and visit places around Sa Pa like Cat Cat Village and Cloud Dragon Skywalk, better stay a week with stamina still strong.

Safety and Comfort Tips

Safety:

Sa Pa is very safe, suitable for solo traveling

5 AM in the dark and foggy and I wasn't afraid

Everyone is minding their own business

No weird stares, no drunk people in the middle of the road, nothing creepy

Comfort:

Skin and hair are very good here

No need for elaborate makeup—important are moisturizer, sunscreen, and lip balm

Way to not get cold quickly: move a lot aka walk fast

Final Verdict

I LOVE THIS CITY SO MUCH — so unreal. Those who say Sa Pa is not good or overrated have the wrong expectations. This city's charm is in its uniqueness.

Of course this is for visiting, not living — I don't know how people can function daily in this extreme weather.

In terms of pollution, it's the second most felt because of diesel vehicles (buses, trucks, etc.), but only when they pass. In general, the air is incredibly fresh and refreshing.

DON'T EXPECT CLEAR BRIGHT WEATHER — IT'S CALLED "MISTY CITY". So many people are disappointed "can't see anything, the fog is so thick" especially at Fansipan. Your expectation is just wrong. I'm so happy when there's fog — it's beautiful and unreal.

This is not a super modern city, mostly very traditional. Small streets, up-down contours because it's on a mountain. Hotels are family-owned and many are old-school. Not suitable for those who like super clean, minimalist, latest furniture. Hotel prices are okay, just check the address on Google Maps to know the exact location.

Very touristy city where locals depend a lot on the tourism sector (food, tours, hotels, souvenir shops). So not everything is super cheap. Better survey several places to compare prices, don't be afraid to bargain politely.

During high season, tourist numbers exceed locals, so it feels very diverse and obviously safer because you know these are all visitors.

NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN, ELDERLY, PEOPLE WHO CAN'T TOLERATE COLD, THOSE WHO WANT BEAUTIFUL PLACES ONLY, THOSE NOT STRONG ENOUGH FOR WALKING + CLIMBING STAIRS.

If you just want a chill itinerary, the main activities are Fansipan + walking around town. If you want more adventure, there are spots like Cat Cat Village and Cloud Dragon Skywalk, but you'll need Grab car or motorbike taxi. To go to Cat Cat you need strong stamina — the walking is long and super slippery.

Must understand your body condition when going to Sa Pa — we're tropical country citizens, afraid of sudden health drops especially after the long journey from Hanoi. So just chill, unless you're in Sa Pa for a week then the itinerary can be more ambitious.

The most chill city compared to Hanoi and HCMC. Streets are quite quiet, but motorbikes and cars are fast even though the roads have many turns and are small. Driving skills are crazy. Horns are VERY LOUD.

Sa Pa is a city I love very much — unreal, magical, and healing. It offers a different experience from Vietnam's big cities — more peaceful, closer to nature, and full of surprises at every corner.

Happy exploring Sa Pa!

Getting to Know Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is Vietnam's largest metropolitan area. It's a dynamic economic and cultural hub with a unique blend of French colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and bustling street life.

HCMC consists of 24 districts, roughly three times the size of Jakarta. Each district has its own character—District 1 is the business and tourism center with skyscrapers like in Sudirman, and there are areas that resemble Singapore. District 3 has more shops and townhouses with a local vibe, while District 10 feels more like an outskirts area with narrow alleyways that often serve as favorite shortcuts for Grab drivers.

Accommodation: M Home Saigon (District 3)

During my stay in HCMC, I chose M Home Saigon located in District 3. This turned out to be an excellent choice for several reasons:

Strategic Location:

Located in District 3 with a local vibe but close to District 1 (city center, CBD, and tourist areas)

Not too deep into narrow alleys, easily accessible

Close to various food options and minimarkets

Easy for Grab pick-up

Facilities and Service:

Very professional host, shared check-in details immediately and fast response, even helped order from Shopee

Friendly cleaning staff (kind ahjummas)

Has an elevator—rare in Vietnam, especially at this price point

Reality matches the photos displayed

Complete facilities, can do laundry yourself (just buy detergent)

Drying area right next to the room on the 4th floor

At a reasonable price, M Home Saigon offers excellent value for travelers wanting to experience HCMC comfortably.

Tourist Destinations

1. Notre Dame Cathedral (Nhà thờ Đức Bà)

A must-visit, especially during Christmas! Although currently under renovation, don't worry because the night view with decorative lights is absolutely beautiful and spectacular. You can take photos in the beautiful front garden.

Tip: Combine your visit with a night city tour bus ride to get more interesting footage of this cathedral.

2. Central Post Office (Bưu điện Trung tâm)

Located across from Notre Dame Cathedral, this post office is a historic building that still functions as a post office. Inside there are many souvenir vendors, though for gifts it's better to look elsewhere.

This place might not need much time—about 15 minutes is enough, especially when crowded. Note the closing time at 6 PM, as the gates will be locked suddenly until the security guard arrives!

3. Book Street (Đường Sách)

Located very close to the Post Office. A whole street filled with bookstores. Most books are in Vietnamese. Good for taking photos but be careful not to block the shops too much or the vendors might scold you. There's traditional music entertainment too. There are chairs for sitting.

Next to Book Street is Highlands Coffee if you want to rest.

4. Diamond Plaza

Still in the same area. A mall with vibes somewhat like Sarinah but filled with branded goods. Has several floors, not large. If you want clean toilets, you can come here, they're on the 3rd floor if I'm not mistaken.

Good for taking photos during Christmas because the decorations are quite nice in front. You can also take photos from across the street if you want to see the mall building.

5. Area Around Ben Thanh Market

Walking toward Ben Thanh Market: there are parks, government buildings, just enjoying the evening atmosphere. Proper pedestrian walkways!

By the way, if you see Ben Nghe Food Market/Street Food, better skip it because the prices are very touristy—over 100k VND, can be 200k, 500k VND. Like outdoor food court hangout spots in Bali that specifically target visitors. Just keep walking straight to Ben Thanh Market, okay!

6. Ben Thanh Market (Chợ Bến Thành)

As reviewed above, the food is okay but be patient and don't feel pressured or uncomfortable with the aggressive vendors. Many say you can buy souvenirs here but I didn't because I was lazy to bargain haha and there wasn't much variety (maybe because it was already night).

At night it's not too crowded and some parts are already closed. I think this place is okay to grab dinner. When you exit the main entrance gate with the big "Chợ Bến Thành" sign, there's a large square where you can take photos with views of the main road and buildings.

7. War Remnants Museum (Bảo tàng Chứng tích Chiến tranh)

A MUST to learn about Vietnam's history. This museum isn't like those in Indonesia that focus on independence and positive things, but truly portrays suffering and doesn't hide historical facts. The content is truly documentation (photos, artifacts) so it's not for taking pretty photos. You need to diligently read the explanations. By the way, there are many unsensored graphics.

You can buy tickets on the spot for 30k VND per person.

8. Huyen Sy Church (Gereja Huyện Sỹ)

You can take Grab Car after visiting the museum area. Walking is also fine.

Very beautiful at Christmas! You don't have to arrive super early but don't come too late or you won't get a seat inside. For Christmas mass, there are no tents outside, just partially.

The safe Christmas evening mass is at 5 PM because it's not too crowded, but if you want one with performances, you can take the 7 PM (favorite time) or 9 PM slot. But of course, arrive early.

Fun Activities

Saigon City Tour Bus (Double Decker)

Riding the double-decker bus around the city is highly recommended!

Buy tickets on Traveloka for around Rp80,000 for the night tour (NOT the 4-hour drop-off one, choose the direct time slot). But actually, they're not too strict about the time, because yesterday I bought for 6 PM but it was full so I was moved to 6:30.

Arrive as early as possible to get seats on top and at the very front!!!!

Get a raincoat. Yesterday it rained heavily so it was very helpful.

Tour takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. So worth it in my opinion. You can see various things including the CBD.

I prefer to take this bus NOT on the first day in HCMC, but after exploring on foot first (so you understand which areas are which), but some prefer to take this bus at the start of the trip or if they don't have much time in HCMC so they can quickly see many places.

There should be an audio guide but why didn't I get one (?)

Taking this bus isn't for people who want to take pretty OOTD photos because it's prone to rain. It's really for sightseeing. I personally love it and don't mind the heavy rain.

Saigon Waterbus (River Cruise)

Cruising on the Saigon River offers a different perspective of the city:

Tickets can be bought on the spot for 30k per person. You can also buy on Traveloka/Klook.

If asked whether day or night is better... I think I prefer night because of the lights and it's not hot. Or maybe late afternoon around sunset.

I boarded at Bach Dang pier (walking distance from the city tour bus drop-off) to Binh Anh pier, then back to Bach Dang. Round trip ~45 minutes.

When you disembark at Binh Anh, there's 20 minutes spare time if you want to use the toilet or find food BUT BE QUICK. The staff are quite strict about time. Don't take too many photos right after getting off the boat (on the bridge) because that's for next passengers to pass through.

By the way there are many river cruise providers, but I chose this because it's cheap and quick. There are other companies offering dinner packages and more with super beautiful boats.

Transportation

Grab Car (Highly Recommended!)

Grab Car is the best transportation choice in HCMC:

The cars are new, clean, and fragrant

Complete with safety instructions

Many use electric vehicles (EVs)

Friendly drivers—some even give small Christmas gifts!

Affordable and safe

Alternative: Xanh SM (Vietnamese electric taxi) but I didn't try it.

Walking

Walking in HCMC is still very doable, especially in District 1. Sidewalks are decent and there are many pedestrian crossings. However, prepare an umbrella and raincoat because rain can come suddenly.

Practical Tips

Weather and Clothing:

Quite hot though not as hot as Indonesia

Prepare an umbrella (can be UV-protected), jacket (can be UV-protected or waterproof), and raincoat because it can go from hot to heavy rain suddenly

Casual clothing like t-shirts, shorts, and sandals is safe enough

SUNSCREEN IS A MUST!!!

Safety:

HCMC is quite safe for travelers

Pollution sometimes exists but still very minimal despite the many vehicles (number of motorcycles >>> cars) and many still use ICE

Who is HCMC For?

Suitable for city people especially those who enjoy urban planning observation and human activities

Not suitable for those who prefer adventure/nature—you might feel bored here with nothing to do

Okay for children and seniors IF the itinerary is relaxed and not much walking

Vietnamese food is generally clean and uses fresh ingredients

Final Verdict

HCMC is an interesting city to explore, especially if you:

Enjoy metropolitan city vibes

Want to experience a blend of modern and traditional culture

Are food lovers wanting to explore street food

Are travelers comfortable with modern transportation like Grab

This city might not be for everyone—if you're looking for nature or adventure experiences, HCMC might feel less satisfying. But for city exploration, culinary adventures, and urban culture observation, HCMC offers a rich and memorable experience.

Happy exploring Ho Chi Minh City! 🇻🇳

Culinary Adventure in Vietnam

Vietnam is a paradise for food lovers. From aromatic pho, crispy banh mi, to strong coffee—every dish has a unique character. During my journey, I explored various eateries in Ho Chi Minh City and Sa Pa, trying dishes that tantalized the taste buds.

This guide summarizes my culinary experiences from my Discord journal drafts, with honest reviews and complete details.

Ho Chi Minh City

1. Gà Ta Ngon Số 1 — Vietnamese Chicken Rice

Location: Very close to M Home Saigon apartment (District 3). But there are many branches throughout the city.

Vietnamese chicken rice. It has similarities to Hainanese chicken rice that we usually eat BUT

Rice: Somewhat similar to Hainanese rice

Pickled mustard greens: Taste similar to kimchi

Chicken: More bland, dominated by ginger flavor (I think the chicken could be made more tender)

OMG Vegetable Salad: Given a huge bowl 🤣 And thought it wouldn't be finished, turns out CLEARED WKWKWK DELICIOUS!! The leaves aren't something familiar that we eat but not too "leafy" in taste, quite neutral and very fresh, not wilted. There's cabbage, beans, and something like fried garlic but not quite because not too garlicky (?), then there are some leaves I don't know and maybe shredded apple (?) don't know what that is wkwkwk. And the dressing is fresh, light, with a hint of sweetness.

The chicken is dipped in some kind of powder seasoning that I THINK uses coffee (?) then squeezed with lime WKWKW sounds random but somehow it just works with that bland chicken! The taste becomes salty and has coffee in it (?)

There's also fish sauce concoction as usual, typical Vietnamese

There's chili sauce but I didn't try it

The funny thing is they don't give dry tissues but cold wet wipes wkwkw.

Price: Ordered the package for 2-3 people gets 1/2 chicken + vegetable salad + 2 rice/congee = 207,000 VND

One of the staffs speak English guys 👍

Good deal buangett!! Viet so far so gooddd 🙆‍♀️

2. SEVEL ⭐🫶

Location: Various locations in HCMC (convenience store)

Minced Pork Porridge:

Lots of meat too & price is 22,000 VND 😭

Taste somewhat similar to Cendana's nasi tim

Thai Tea Choux:

DELICIOUS, only a little sweet.

But indeed the tea flavor isn't very strong.

So far I feel Vietnamese food isn't very sweet 👍

Loved it so much bought again

Banh Mi Pork Floss:

Also delicious.

If you want to imagine the taste, it's like Mako's abon bread but with banh mi crust.

Very good 15,000 VND

Banh Gio:

Like pork bakcang but not using rice or glutinous rice (?)

Soft texture similar to banana cake, the wet cake kind, tastes like arem-arem.

The pork is awesome, there's also quail egg.

Price 18,000 VND and condition is HOT 👍

They store it in a display case that also has a heater

3. Pho Quynh

Location: 323 Phạm Ngũ Lão, Phường Phạm Ngũ Lão, Quận 1, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh

If you're at Huyen Sy Church or Little Hanoi cafe, can stop by here because it's that close. The menu is very similaaar to Pho Ba Ba. I ordered pho tai chin (rare beef + brisket).

Broth: Great broth, rich, and a bit sweet. If Pho Ba Ba doesn't have any sweetness

Add: Some kind of chili oil with shrimp and lots of lime—delicious

Meat: Super soft

Vegetables: As usual given a mountain of greens. Only the basil is good. The rest are bitter 🤣

DON'T EAT THE SLICED CHILIES BECAUSE TURNS OUT THEY'RE HELLISH DOOMSDAY SPICY ‼️🌶️

CHEAP PRICE, big portion, abundant meat 🌟🫶

Btw here no pork, no chicken ya. Beef onlyyy

4. Banh Mi Sau Minh

Location: 170 Võ Văn Tần, Phường 5, Quận 3, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh

Local recommendation

CHEAP PRICE 45,000 VND JUMBO PORTION. Pork yaaa 🫶

Filling is various weh the meat and vegetables are ulalala.

There's something like paprika or chilli but not spicy

The only minus is it's takeaway only, can't dine in

5. Banh Mi Vietnam — Best Street Food (Airport)

Location: Tan Son Nhat International Airport T1 Departure, VietJet area

Hunting edition wandering around and finding something interesting and good price in the middle of the onslaught of menus >100,000 VND.

Banh mi at the veeery end near gate teens or 20. It's a small stall in front of Burger King & Popeyes. There are various menus and I chose banh mi thit khia (braised pork) price 50,000 VND DELICIOUS!

Portion is smaller than Banh Mi Sau Minh. Btw Sau Minh is the cold cut type of banh mi so the meats aren't the hot freshly cooked type. This one at the airport is braised pork so it's hot & seasoned. Depends on taste which one you prefer.

6. Mon Chay Thanh Dam — Vegetarian

Location: Small food court in front of gate 5

Cơm chiên với rau củ xiao (fried rice + stir fried veggies & tofu → vegetarian menu).

Price 78,000 VND.

7. GO! Mien Dong / Big C Supermarket (District 10)

DURIAN CAKE HEAVEN + PORK CAKE + LAPCHIONG + CASHEW

RTE (Ready to Eat) food super complete

Can also buy seasonings (like fish sauce, instant seasonings)

Some products show nutrition facts & ingredients (info displayed)

Available RTE Food:

Wet spring rolls like at Pho Ba Ba but with pork

Fried spring rolls (minimum buy 3 pieces)

Chicken THIGH JUMBO SIZE like grilled but actually a bit bland (expected because of the large size)

Some kind of "uduk" rice package but probably glutinous rice and not as seasoned as uduk rice. With lapchiong & pork pate

Samcan rice package

A la carte pork with bamboo shoots

So many and cheap-cheap. Chopsticks & spoons can take yourself in the eating area (free).

8. Stalls Around M Home Saigon (District 3)

Very friendly prices.

Com tam (warteg style but pork 😀): Can point-point. Very good price, once got 2 portions big size rice + vegetables + chicken + woku-style squid + pork 160,000 VND

Bun bo hue (similar to pho but with shrimp paste. I feel it's like laksa without coconut milk)

Bun thit nuong (rice vermicelli salad luuuuv)

9. Fruit Juice

Fruit juuuice yay buy on Grab Food there are many. Don't forget no sugar (khong duong) no ice (khong da) ya!

Tiem Tra Co Ba:

The unique one is "cherry" or cerise juice.

Taste is somewhat like leaves WKWK but it's okay just enjoy it

Nuoc Ep 100 Vi:

A bit expensive compared to other places but nice packaging with proper plastic bottle and the plastic is cool has dividers + given extra ice.

I ordered peach guava delicious

Besides Grab Food, there are many also on the roadside and at Ben Tanh Market / Cho Ben Tanh.

10. Ben Tanh Market / Cho Ben Tanh

There are many stalls and they're very aggressive offering. Basically don't feel pressured or uncomfortable, just choose slowly. Menu and prices are already posted by them so won't get scammed.

That time I was at the stall near the entrance. Prices can be 50,000++

Available Menu:

Banh xeo (pancake): Though flour, the center that's a bit wet doesn't feel too floury ew so it's okay. Lots of meat

Bun thit nuong

Fried noodles

Soursop juice

Sa Pa

1. Bánh Hạt Dẻ — Chestnut Cake

CHESTNUT CAKE!!!!!!!! a.k.a pia chestnut 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷 (btw chestnut is one of the foods that's characteristic of Sa Pa)

I can say this is THE BEST PIA I'VE EVER HAD 🥹 I honestly prefer this over all types of pia/bakpia in Indonesia BECAUSE IT'S NOT SWEET! Like really subtleeee. Filled with chestnut & mung bean mixture. The skin has flaky type and soft type. I like both 🫶

After wandering to various spots, I recommend these two places:

Tiệm nhà Mông Sapa / Mông House Shop (08 Xuan Vien / phone: 0914812655):

Location in an area with pagoda-like decorations

I bought 3x because I was so addicted 🤣

Here it's really freshly made fried so still hot.

It's the flaky type and the seller lady is friendly always gives tester wkwkw.

Price 10,000 VND per piece

Yen Nhi Co So Ban (023 Pan Xi Pang / phone: 0976528843):

Location from Hotel de La Coupole go straight (down toward Mimosa Hotel or Sapa Church) later it's near a turn on the left side of the road.

Here the chestnut cake type is the soft one.

They reheat it in the oven so delicious especially in cold weather.

I bought 10 at once for supplies in Hanoi 🥹🫶

Price 10,000 VND per piece too.

Tips: If someone recommends buying at the night market because it's only 5,000 VND per piece, NO NO!!! It is cheaper but not good. The skin is a bit hard, the filling isn't felt and not freshly made. The ones at the night market are colorful, some purple, green. The taste is the same. But meh all of them. I think they probably take from the same producer then resell.

2. BBQ at Night Market

This is also characteristic of Sa Pa. Very many scattered everywhere, from restaurants to night market. I personally recommend at the night market, specifically at Am Thuc He Pho (enter from the alley in front of Vietcom Bank, basically it's on the right side and the SECOND BBQ STALL YA, not the first).

Why this one?

Menu is very complete starting from 10,000 VND per piece

The taste of the marinade seasoning is right

The taste of the dipping sauce is also very good though a bit spicy

I tried the stall next to it (first stall from the front) the menu isn't as complete though the place is very crowded, the dipping sauce also less balanced (too much nutmeg), and when I wanted to order rice the price was 40,000 VND?? So didn't order rice. Just ordered baked sweet potato at Am Thuc He Pho, 15,000 VND wkwkwk.

Btw the sweet potato isn't very sweet, the texture is dense rather hard (not like Cilembu sweet potato that's soft, wet, buttery), but somehow it goes well with the savory smoky BBQ. Sweet potato + dipping sauce = BEST COMBO 🌟

I tried BBQ at the restaurant in front of Hotel de La Coupole or Sa Pa Station but I think overall Am Thuc He Pho is still better because at this restaurant the seasoning is a bit bland, the dipping sauce is good actually and not spicy but the taste is more mantep Am Thuc He Pho, and the service is super duper slow.

3. Coffee Recommendations

1. Cong Ca Phe:

Has many branches all around Vietnam.

I tried the one in Sa Pa.

The specialty is COCONUT 🌟

Recommend coconut coffee (with condensed milk if you want hot. But if you want iced, they only have the blended one) & COCONUT COCOA 🫶

The coffee isn't very sweet even with condensed milk.

Can taste the coconut.

Oh my coconut cocoa is ulalaaa.

They only have iced blend, no hot.

Turns out drinking iced at 6°C is also nice 😀

Price isn't very cheap, cafe prices.

2. Highlands Coffee:

Has even more branches, even at the airport.

Like Kopken or similar in Indonesia.

I tried the one in Hanoi near the bus office.

Ordered latte, cappuccino and iced coffee with almond + fresh milk.

The iced coffee HONESTLY VERY GOOD but the coffee effect hehehehehe quite destructive for the body 🙏

Price also not very cheap, standard

3. LangBiang Cafe:

Specialty is EGG COFFEE.

Found this actually randomly after eating near Ngoc Son Temple Hanoi, turns out VERY GOOD!

Ordered egg coffee (hot) & iced banana coffee.

The egg coffee doesn't have egg taste but very creamy.

Has sweetness but blends well with the bitter coffee.

The banana coffee.... ULALAAA they use real bananas, can feel the chunks.

Oh so delicious want more 😭

Staff also good at English.

Price is hipster cafe prices, not cheap.

Btw if looking for egg coffee there's Cafe Giang but I didn't have time to go there because quite far from the apartment.

4. Menytrii:

Really randomly tried this while walking looking for food in Hanoi.

Ordered hot cappuccino I think.

Good and cheap only 20,000 VND!

Had time to chat with the person who turned out to be the owner and he told me his parents have a 5-hectare coffee plantation.

Very friendly he's like excited because someone bought 🥹

Basically if you go to Vietnam musttt try coffee especially coconut and egg variants! But if you like classic coffee also very allowed emang pada dasarnya enak-enak.

4. Eatery Near Mimosa Hotel

Local restaurant beside Mimosa Hotel.

Go-to for quick breakfast, cheap (~40,000 VND per portion), good, comfort food.

Menu for breakfast is like warteg point-point (RICE JUMBO PORTION can be for 2-3 people but locals eat one portion alone 🥹👍)

Pork pho, fried rice, fried noodles (using pho rice noodles)

Very local vibe, no tourist spotted

Soul food.

Really relies on the taste of fresh ingredients.

Pork pho uses thinly sliced roasted pork oh delicious.

Fried noodles also good but for MSG worshipers will say it's bland 👊

Outside provided something like bitter tea free but cups are limited

5. Phở Con Sủi Ông Hà

Pho con sui is characteristic of Sa Pa influenced by Chinese culture because Sa Pa location is already very close to China.

Basically called "dry pho" because the broth isn't as much as regular pho, texture is quite thick like lomie but gradually becomes liquid when cold. The broth is red because it uses chili but not spicy at all. Savory taste from pork broth, a little sweet, a liiiittle sour, great especially in cold weather 🥹

If you want to add freshness, can add garlic pickles.

At this restaurant they only sell one menu. Price 60,000 VND.

6. Misc — Nice to Try

This is the miscellaneous edition just for fun in the sense of nice to try, but not mandatory. More like informing that these foods exist lho that can be tried if you want.

Banh trang nuong: Vietnamese pizza.

But I kinda forget the taste wkwk as I remember it's good. More like chasiu I think huaa forget, later if I remember I'll update. Bought at the night market at the first BBQ stall! (refer to BBQ review above)

Hot dessert like bubur sumsum etc. but different:

This one is mostly beans, no sumsum

The broth is a little sweet and also uses young coconut

Price 25,000 VND

Buy at night market too at Tuan Che stall

The seller uses ear mic 🤣

Fried rice bought near Mimosa Hotel. Big portion.

Fried pork spring rolls bought near Mimosa Hotel.

Milk and Drinks

FAMI Nuts/Beans Milk:

Tried 3 variants just for fun:

Red bean

Green soy (very low sugar)

Green soy (no sugar)

Delicious. Feels like drinking real bean milk because the ingredients aren't complicated. Yesterday bought at Xuân Trường Supermarket (Sa Pa) but should be available everywhere. Very cheap price too only 6,000 VND per piece.

Vinamilk:

Famous cow's milk brand too + has many products

Milk Buying Tips:
‼️ If buying small carton milk, check whether can buy individually or must buy 1 pack (contains 4 cartons for example). Just read on the shelf whether the price is per piece (vi) or per pack (hop). Can also ask the staff if unsure.

General Culinary Tips in Vietnam

Prices: Many eateries with affordable prices (20k-50k VND), but there are also pricey ones especially in tourist areas

Language: Don't be afraid to use Google Translate or gestures—most sellers are friendly

Bargaining: At night markets and souvenir shops, don't be afraid to bargain politely

Dietary: Pork is very commonly used. If you don't eat pork, make sure to ask "không heo?"

Spicy: Vietnamese chili can be very spicy! If you can't handle spicy, say "không cay" (not spicy)

Water: Usually given free at local restaurants

Tissues: Many places use wet wipes, rarely dry tissues

Transportation and shopping tips for traveling to Vietnam

Transportation

Grab Car from Airport

HCMC (Tan Son Nhat Airport):

Exit from arrival, find pillar number 5 (there's Lucky Cafe) then cross over. That's the Grab pick-up point.

Price is cheap because the airport is located in the city center.

Hanoi (Noi Bai Airport):

From arrival, exit then cross to the parking area. No specific landmark. Don't pick up in the lane specifically for taxis/airport transfers, must cross first.

Price can be 200-300k VND because the distance to city center is quite far (Noi Bai is located on the outskirts like CGK).

Tip: Connect your card (Visa/Mastercard) to the Grab app. It will automatically deduct in VND currency. I used Jenius CC and it was safe.

Sleeper Bus: Hanoi to Sa Pa

Book via Klook, it's easy. I prefer the night schedule (10 PM) so I don't waste time on the road and don't need to book accommodation for that night.

Bus Details:

Shopping

Online Shopping: Shopee Vietnam

Can't download app from Play Store (regional issue). So access via website https://shopee.vn/ (can translate in Chrome)

If you want to create an account must verify via VN phone number (+84). So alternatives are either buy SIM card or ask Airbnb host to borrow their number or ask host to order the items for you then we pay them (cash is easier).

I took the last option. So I send product link and notes (need how many pcs, type, etc.) then they order.

Supposedly will cover luggage arriving next day. Even cheaper using their account, free shipping too wkwk.
